Our facilitators are essential to what we do. We know our team makes an impact on each individual who spends time with The EDGE. We see that in the feedback from participants and in the clients who keep returning year after year. Our facilitators carry great responsibility, guiding the group throughout the day, managing and reducing risk on technical ropes course elements, assessing group’s emotional safety and readiness, and guiding reflection for greater learning.

Facilitator Responsibilities

  • Attend all required trainings.
  • Effectively lead groups through team building activities and reflections.
  • Properly set up and manage risk on low and high ropes elements.
  • Evaluate the physical and emotional well-being of participants.
  • Respond to emergency situations as they arise.
  • Inspect and set up high and low elements for daily use.
  • Ensure proper use of equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with chaperones, youth, adults, and other facilitators.
  • Facilitate thoughtful reflections with group members to build skills.

Required Qualifications:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Ability to attend all training sessions (minimum of 40 hours).
  • Ability to work two days per week (Sunday through Saturday) between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm.
  • This position is subject to a criminal background investigation; employment is contingent upon the successful completion of this process.
  • Ability to lift up to 40lbs.
  • Ability to walk 1.2 miles
  • Senior Facilitator position additionally requires:
    • 200 documented hours of challenge course experience over the last 5 years; this can include direct program delivery and design, activity preparation, belaying, and inspection.
    • 40 documented hours of challenge course specific training.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience leading groups or team building activities.
  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification, or ability to obtain certification within 30 days of start date.
  • Experience with challenge course or adventure programs, including ground initiatives, low ropes, high ropes activities, or rock climbing.
  • Degree in or pursuing a degree in education, recreation, or related fields.
  • Prior experience working with children or youth.
  • Prior experience in educational settings.
  • Prior experience in corporate development settings.

Pay Rate

  • $15.25 – $18.50 per hour

Professional Facilitator

 Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 years professional work experience in the field of Education, Organizational Development, Higher Education, Business, or a similar field. Prior experience in facilitation, coaching, training, or development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience facilitating group-based training or development.
  • A clear understanding of experiential learning theory
  • Holds certification in administration of one or more assessment tools (MBTI, STRENGTHS, etc.)

Additional Responsibilities

  • complete needs assessment with Corporate, business, or military clients for proper program planning.
  • Develop professional workshop material: handouts, power point presentations, etc.
  • Provide written summary of the program provided to client.

Pay Rate: $18.50 – $50 per hour

Work Hours

Programming can occur seven days a week, mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Our positions offer flexible hours. Facilitators work an average of 12 hours per week while some work as few as 2x per month and others as many as 30 hours per week, depending on their availability. Our primary program season is March to November, though there is some year-round programming.

Some facilitators may work more limited hours due to their specialization in working with professional groups. Many find this work a good fit between other interests and priorities.

Work Location

Programs primarily occur at the EDGE Challenge Course on Mason’s Science and Technology Campus, About 15% of our programs occur offsite at either the Fairfax campus or within a 30 minute drive of Fairfax. There is a regular shuttle for Mason students/staff that runs from Fairfax Campus to Sci Tech Campus daily.
